Sports nationalism is an ideology using sports and sports have a function to strengthen the nationalism. Sports promote integration of the nation-state, provide national sentiment through victory, and reinforce a national identity. For these functions sports nationalism influenced colonial countries under the rule of the world powers. Especially in the Japanese colonial period, it acted as a strong psychological ideology.
